I just bought a Conoco Ethyl 30 inch like the one pictured. I am traveling and shipped the sign to myself without taking the actual sign photo. Does anyone know the date and info on these black rimed signs verses the ones that have the dark green rims?
Thanks for any help!

Randy...I saw these on EBay. Mine has all the characteristics of true age. I was wondering if these repops are fashioned after a true legitimate Conoco Sign. That is the bit of info I cannot find.....or am I in a heavy state of denial?!

...Steve, I'm sorry to say - but after seeing the detailed close-up of the Ethyl logo. I'm sure it's a fake frown ...I'd ask for a full refund...

...the characteristics of the fonts used in the Ethyl logo are a dead-on match to the counterfeit from India...it's just been aged...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

One last question...does anyone know if there ever was an original Conoco Sign that this reproduction was made to replicate?

Leggo sword metaphor...love it! At least you can pull it out and get your money back from eBay with no blood from the wallet wound!

I think I will start a support group called “repops anonymous”.

We can all get together and I would say “ Hi, my name is Steve, I am a “repopoholic””. Everyone would say, “Hi Steve!” Then we could take turns telling our stories about how we got all excited and too quickly pulled our money out of our pockets and lived to regret it. We could serve punch and cookies.

Anyone want to join?

There are two kinds of collectors; those that admit they've been fooled and bought a repop, and those that lie and say they've never done so. It would be a large club indeed.

Lessons Learned:

1) Be careful pulling your money out of your billfold too fast.
2) Do your research. Verify, verify, verify.
3) Be prepared to accept either the good or especially the bad news.
4) Either keep your mistake or sell it as a reproduction.
5) Don’t do it again!!!

I sort of walked through this mess, penning the results in this thread on Oldgas.com. Here is the epilogue:

I sold the sign as a reproduction for half what I paid. I ended up selling 4 other of my signs to make up the difference. I told my wife about the mistake I had made. After nearly divorcing me she accepted my error and agreed not to burn down our garage.

I now wish that I had not fallen on my sword...it really makes a mess! Besides the bloody mess I have learned that “sword falling” really does not help at all...time heals all wounds...life does go on. So if you are like me and have really made a mess...remember...a penny saved is a penny earned, only you can prevent forest fires, a stitch in time saves nine, and all sorts of things like that.
Steve
