Hello,

I am finally restoring the very first pump that I ever bought. A G&B T-176 large access door. I want to keep the pump as accurate as I can. Were brass cylinder rods and bolts to use for assembly of the skins etc... ever an option when originally purchased or is it just something that restores do to make the pump look flashier now days? Thanks, Andrew

Pretty sure brass was never offered back in the day (99%sure). I have gone thru an awful lot of pumps and have never seen one with brass cylinder rods, except on a restored model.

I'd say no. I've owned countless visible pump and never one with brass rods. Brass is too soft to properly torque.

There is nothing wrong with using brass rods if you like the look. They can be torqued down enough for a decorative pump.

I didn't know if brass was frowned upon in the restoration world:-)

Never really cared what other guys thought, it’s what I worked on, had fun/frustration working on and enjoyed looking at when I was done. Do what you want and let the experts say what they will but who gives a rip! Just have fun and the hell with them.

I agree with Done4. It is your pump to enjoy. I also appreciate the guys that have great looking patina pumps. All my pumps that I have done are what I call rescue pumps. You do not want them around unrestored. The one I am working on now had 22 bullet holes in it . I have welded them and ground smooth. When I decide to sell them ;they will go to Barrett or Mecum. Have fun.

Anything oil and gas.
